New stuff

January 4, 2008

The local CompUSA store is closing (actually all of them are) so I went by there today to check prices on CF cards. They were 15% off but they only had 2/4/8 gig cards. I don’t like trusting that many images to a single card. I have a 1 gig card and it will hold 285 images if I’m shooting .jpeg and 125 if shooting raw.

The way I shoot I won’t normally fill up a card even when shooting raw. Even on vacation where I may shoot a few hundred images I always have a laptop available and transfer my images each evening. I don’t need or want such a large CF card so I left CompUSA without purchasing anything.

Next stop was BestBuy as I was also looking for a case to carry my cards in. I ended up picking up a Lowepro case and spending some time looking at the cameras and accessories. I also spent some time helping a customer by answering questions about the Canon line. All the employee seemed able to do was go to a terminal and print the specs for the customer.

I’ll give you the same advice that I gave the customer – there really isn’t a lot of differences between Canon and Nikon. Both have cameras that will meet your needs so concentrate on one that feels good in your hands and has the features you need.

I also advise them that when it comes down to picking a camera a lot can be said for going with the same brand most of your friends use (we’re talking DSLRs here not point and shoot). Having friends around using similar equipment means you have someone you can share lenses, flash and such with as well as someone to help you learn the features on your camera. It really isn’t fun being the lone Nikon dude when all of your friends are shooting Canons.

I’m working on getting some of my images ready for posting so keep checking back.
